Unfortunately, indie game fans will need to wait a few more months before finding out. Developer Cloisters Interactive just announced that it’s delaying the game until March 24th, 2022. There is some good news for Game Pass subscribers, though, as A Memoir Blue arrives on Game Pass the same day.

A Memoir Blue follows a champion swimmer named Miriam. On the day of her greatest triumph, Miriam finds herself looking back on her childhood memories of a trip she took with her mother. An example of magical realism, A Memoir Blue lets players explore Miriam’s childhood through a combination of 3D and hand-drawn 2D animation. The developer puts this on full display in the release date trailer published on January 24th.
The trailer’s only around one minute long, though it does an excellent job of setting players up for what Cloisters’ clearly hopes will be an emotionally moving experience. The trailer opens with a somewhat exhausted-looking Miriam falling asleep on her couch. A Memoir Blue seems to take the phrase “a flood of memories” literally, transporting her to a submerged train car. There, Miriam sees a 2D animated version of her and her mother stepping off the train.
The trailer then treats viewers to a series of animated flashbacks intercut with the adult Miriam exploring a strange but beautiful world constructed by her memories. According to the developers, A Memoir Blue tries to explore “The timeless bond between mother and daughter.” If nothing else, the trailer makes it seem like Cloisters knows how to pull it off. Granted, it is a lot easier to make a good advertisement than a good game and misleading trailers can be a serious issue. Hopefully, though, the final product lives up to players’ expectations.
Cloisters Interactive didn’t go into too much detail about why it decided to delay the game by an extra month. However, the studio did release a tweet explaining that it needed additional time to bring A Memoir Blue up to its standards. While the delay is bound to be disappointing for some, there’s no denying that it’s generally better to push a game back than forcing it out before it’s ready.
A Memoir Blue releases March 24th, 2022 for iOS, PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
